    our script
    Script for the Big Ask

Robert : hello and welcome to our presentation about the Big ask!

William: we think the poet feels strongly about war and that it is wrong

Robert: we think this because she uses powerful language in the last verse such as “the WMD” “ the stash” “Well maybe not in Iraq”.

William: We think this poem was written to show how war can be a waste of effort and money. This poem is about the war in Iraq. This means it is recent poem

Robert: the poem is written in a sort of Question and Answer way such as the top line says “What’s was it Sisyphus pushed up the hill?” then the second line implies that’s a reply to the first line by saying “I wouldn’t call it a rock”.

William: the reply to the question is in a sarcastic way and sometimes lies. Sisyphus was a ancient Greek story. He was lazy and he was punished and had to push a bolder up a hill and it kept rolling down the hill. He had to do this for the rest of his eternity.

Robert: the language used in the poem implies that she doesn’t like war

William: “Guantanamo bay – how many detained?” and the second one replies: “how many grains in a sack” this is also sarcasm because he is saying lots of people in Guantanamo bay

Robert: Guantanamo bay is a prison and people who commit an terrorist act the go there

William: the poem is a strong poem and uses strong language and phrases

Robert : thank you for listing

  2. My speeech:)
How does the poet feel and what languages is used to show this?
well, carol ann duffy used attitude alot in this poem and lied quite alot too!Such as.. when she says"I wouldn't call it a rock" i know she is lying as i knew its a rock, she also be's quite sarcastic also trying to confuse the reader. i found out that the poem is against the Guantanamo bay detention camp i kknow this because in the poem it states 'Guantanamo bay-how may detained this makes you feel like she don't like the idea of this and wants ti to stop! i also think she feels sorry for the prisoniers and they would be much better off in iraq as she says"maybe holed under a shack" and " =maybe he swung from the neck" these sayings make you feel that she is sorry for them but they should be punished!

  3. The poem was written in 2009 by a women called carol ann duffy it was written because she was expressing her feeling about war she thinks about how people died in war and how they were tortued like sisyphsis which was rollling a boulder up a hill and to see it roll back down again the poem is about the iraq war and how war was a terrible thing like prisoners being stripped and streched.

  4. I think that the poem is about modern war and all about the sacrifise people make away from there family to go to war and also to show the effects that war causes on everyone and to show people have different opions.

I think the poem was written to expand peoples views on war and to relise the risks people take and also the memory of her friend adrian mitchell.

this is what i say in the presnetation:
we think that the poet is feeling sad because she is thinking about all soliders leaving there hame and sacraficing there lives for there country.

and also feeling upset about the soliders and saying some are dead.

the langauge is used to show there feelings by using a interview with a reporter and by using descripted words to describe the war.

what is the context of the poem?why was it written?
i think the poem is written becauseits shows the feeling and emotions. the poem has bursting out into a compostion and an arguement about what is going on!i also think its written to make the reader understand that not all question can be answered and that m any people are suffering around the world!

    mollie
    >what is it about?
    >the big ask by carl ann duffy.
    >it seems that during this peom there is a conversation between someone who could be a jounalist and someone who is a high authority person they are asking Questabout the iraq war
    >sisyphus is a greek myth he pushed a bolder up a hill and it came back down.

    amy
    >why was it written?
    >it was written to express her feelings about war and what she thought it was about

    mollie
    >how does the poet feel?
    >by saying the word sisyphus she feels angry that the war is still going on even though its is pointless
    >she could be annoyed that so many people are going to war

    >what is happening in this poem?
    >there is a Question on ever line so this could mean thatthe person asking the Questions has done something wrong and wants to put it right by asking questions

  8. i belive that the poem is related to the convertstion betweem the goverment being guetioned by journilist about the terrioist detention camp located in cuba the guatomo bay camp that was organised by the us goverment to detain those who helped in terriost attaks or have links to alquedo or other major teriost leaders. the convertion format leads me to believe that the journlist is the one with the text normal format and the one who ask quetions the text in itallitcs is the govermentof wich seems to be avioding ansewing the questions this makes me believe you can see this when the jounilist asks 'your estimate of the war?' and the goverment ansews ' i had no brief this tells you that the journilist ask a quetion of wich only tehe goverment could know however the goverment ansews with a brief snappy of wich comes across rude. you can also tell that the person is of som ort of govement as he/she ansews one of thee quetions with'nothing to do with barack'this is meant to be barack obama and for this person to say this they wouold have to have some sort of connection with him to know this information however this poem also has a lines of wich tells you that they have some sort of torture that is used ion the camp 'on what was the prisioners stripped and streatched?' and the ansew 'nothing resembling a rack'this tells us that the prisoners may be beaten/tortured and the anwser is not a direct yes or no also in the poem the goverment is asked 'how many detainies were held' and the anwers 'how many grains in a sack' as this ansew is not very clear as grains in a sack could be from 5 too 5000 , you never could know this shows that the camp has either to many detainies thatc they an not say or they do not know this makes me come to the conclusuion that the govement did not ansewer the quetions directly as they simply could not due to the way they organise the camp.

in conclusion i believe that the reason the peom was writted was so that people are aware of the guatamo bay camp is orgainsied and for people to read about the way the govement felt towards the camp and their honesty

  9. Why was is written?
Tennyson is describing the poem as if he is saying sorry towards England, he is also describing some of the bad effects of World War II, and some of the good effects of the war, to make it not entirely bad.

    What is it about?
the poem describes a huge war between countries and that the Light Brigade is standing up to the enemy, but losing badly, although Tennyson describes some of the good effects of the war quite well.

    How does the poet feel?
Tennyson feels upset as he is describing the poem in a sad way, as he is saying how the Light Brigade lost the war and is describing their loss in a very effective way.

How is the language used in the poem?
    ''into the valley of death''
    ''white horse and hero fell''
this poem is showing that Tennyson is telling the reader that the heroes have fallen against the terrorists and is describing their defeat effectively, and is also describing their deaths and the loss of members in the Light Brigade.

  10. Ben: welcome to are presatation on the poem the big ask we think the poem is about a interviewer inteviwing a polation about thee actions on war and whilst the polition is beging inteviwed about his actions he is denying eveything.

Dan: the poem was written in 2009 by the poet carol ann duffy.we think that the poet thinks that poliitions have no feelings and are like terrists

  11. We believe that this poem is an interrogation of a terrorist, we get our evidence from this from the lines:
“What’s your understanding of shock and awe?
    I didn’t plan the attack”
“Once inside the mosque, describe what you saw.
I couldn’t see through the smoke.”

The poem describes the interrogation of a terrorist using poetic language and a format of conversation.

The poet feels extremely tense and uptight about interrogation we know this because of the repeated questions being said, once ones answered another is asked almost instantly.

    Our script:
Chloe: Hello, this is our presntation by Millie and I.
Millie: We are working on a poem called 'The Big Ask' by Carol Ann Duffy.
Chloe: What is the poem about?.. Here are two quotations from the poem ~ 'will you solemnly swear on the bible' ~ and the answer ~ 'I couldn't swear on a book'
Millie: We found out it was a a convosation between a terrorist and a journalist.
Chloe: She is a gay female poet. And although this poem is not one of her best the words still have alot of strenghth, meaning and feeling!
Millie: Some more about the poem, it was written in 2009 about war in iraq and afganistan , but for now some more information about the woman herself.
Chloe: She was born 23rd December 1955 and she's still alive, she is currently 55 and living a very happy poety life.

  13. Kane: This is our presentation on the poem "Big ask"

Josh: The poem is about Modern day war and how many people died for there country

Kane: I think the reason for the poem being written is to show that no matter how hard we try
we will never win and carol ann duffy feels bad about the lives that were lost

Josh: We think the poet feels sorry for all the innocent lives lost because they didnt realise that they wouldnt win

kane: The poet writes "Guantanamo Bay - How many detained?" this shows that she is against the idea of Guantanamo bay.
the words "How many detained" shows that she dislikes Guantanamo bay so she dosnt make the sentance sound propper.
a good alternative would be "How many people were detained"

Josh: We also think this poem was made to show how war is a huge waste of effort and war. This poem is based on the war in Iraq.
This shows that it must be a fairly recent poem, unless there has been war's with Iraq before.

Kane: The place Guantanamo Bay is a prison where they send terrorists.

    Josh: Thanks for listening!
